Changes to Prescription Ordering

From December 1st 2020 we will no longer be accepting prescription requests made by email.

In the interest of safety and efficiency, we kindly request that all online requests are made using the NHS App, or on Patient Access (pin required). These services mean you can quickly and conveniently order your repeat prescriptions and your request will come straight through to our clinical system. There is also a box to send any comments or questions relating to your request and the option to change your nominated pharmacy.

Since the start of the pandemic, we have seen a huge increase in the number of emails the practice receives each day and managing email prescription requests has become unsustainable for our team. We have also become aware that errors are more likely when medications are requested by this method as our non-clinical team have to correctly identify the required item on the system.

If you need any help with how to order your prescriptions please ask the reception team. For patients who do not have internet access, we will continue to accept paper requests via the box at reception and orders made through local pharmacies.

Do you take ranitidine?

Ranitidine (brand name Zantac) is a medicine commonly used to treat 'gastric symptoms' including indigestion and heartburn. As a precaution, all ranitidine products have been recalled due to possible contamination with an impurity. Where possible, we will offer patients an alternative, but this may not be an option for everyone, depending on your other medicines and health conditions.

There is no need to be concerned if you have been taking ranitidine as levels of the possible contaminant are likely to be very low.

Emerade Activation Fault - Patients to receive Replacement Pens (Jun 2020)

Over the past few months, the UK’s regulator of medicines (Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) has issued a series of alerts relating to Emerade adrenaline pens. These are devices used in the emergency treatment of severe allergic reactions or 'anaphylaxis'. Tests indicated that approximately 13% of pens needed a higher than normal force to activate which could lead to doses not being delivered. 

Initial advice to patients was to always carry two pens, to press the device firmly if used and to try again if it failed to activate. Now there are sufficient stocks of alternative brands so patients are able to replace their Emerade pens with an alternative. The alternative brands come in a maximum strength of 300mcg but don’t worry if you had an Emerade 500mcg pen – the evidence suggests that an Epipen or Jext 300mcg pen will be a suitable replacement for you and these actually deliver a similar amount of drug.

We have identified affected patients on our clinical system and have issued new prescriptions for Epipen or Jext. Patients should return their Emerade brand pens to the pharmacy when they go to collect.

Requesting Repeat Prescriptions

The quickest and easiest way to order your repeat prescription is via the NHS App – search your app store or download here. (https://www.nhs.uk/using-the-nhs/nhs-services/the-nhs-app/). Using the app, you can order medications, view your medication records and book telephone call backs.

Remember to nominate your chosen pharmacy so that we can send your prescription electronically. During the coronavirus pandemic this is especially important for reducing non-essential visits to the practice, helping us to ensure social distancing can be maintained.

Medicines Available ‘Over the Counter’

General Practices in England will generally not be able to give you an NHS prescription for medicines that are available to buy in pharmacies and supermarkets.

NHS England changed the rules on treatments for minor and self-limiting conditions in 2018 with the aim of prioritising prescriptions for more serious or long-term health problems. Prior to this the NHS was spending around £136 million a year on prescriptions for treatments that can be purchased over the counter.

Please ask your local pharmacy for advice if you may need treatment for conditions such as:

• coughs, colds & sore throats • mild to moderate hay fever • conjunctivitis • dry eyes • dandruff • nappy rash • cradle cap • teething • travel sickness • head lice • indigestion • dry skin • warts and verrucae • insect bites • ear wax • mouth ulcers • threadworms • athlete’s foot

Exceptions can be made at the discretion of the treating practitioner, for example where over the counter treatments have not worked, in more severe forms of the illness, or where the licence does not allow the product to be sold to certain groups e.g. women who are pregnant or children under a certain age. Please speak to the practice if you need further information.

Practice Policies on Prescribing

Jubilee Street Practice has a comprehensive repeat prescribing policy to ensure the safety of our patients and to make sure we are using medicines appropriately. Our policy is regularly reviewed to ensure we keep up to date with the latest guidance.

Why am I being advised to reduce or stop my stomach acid medication?

Proton Pump Inhibitors (or PPIs) are a group of medicines used to reduce stomach acid and include omeprazole, lansoprazole, esomeprazole and pantoprazole. These medicines are very commonly prescribed but many patients continue taking them for longer than they may need. Usually a course of two to three months is sufficient to help heartburn or indigestion to settle.
As with any prescription medication, PPIs can cause side effects which are more likely if you take a high dose or use them for a long period of time. More and more evidence is coming out that suggests this group of medications may be linked to more problems than we knew about previously. We are therefore re-assessing which of our patients these medicines remain the best choice for.

What are the possible risks from long-term use of a PPI?

Always speak to your GP or pharmacist before stopping prescribed medicines. PPIs should be reduced slowly to minimise rebound symptoms. If you have a history of stomach ulcers or bleeding, or have severe symptoms it is likely that continuing your PPI is the best option – your GP can help you to make this decision.

Creams and ointments for eczema and other skin conditions

These are known as ‘emollients’ and are really important for the maintenance and treatment of dry skin conditions where they need to be used frequently to prevent dryness and itching – often up to four or five times a day.

Funding on the NHS is only for diagnosed skin conditions. Mild dry skin is something most people experience from time to time and simple emollients (moisturisers) can be purchased from any supermarket, health shop or pharmacy.

Due to the large quantities of these products prescribed by GP practices, we are asked to prescribe from an approved list of cost-effective products. Many of these contain exactly the same ingredients as more well-known brands, for example ‘Zerodouble’ is the same as ‘Doublebase’ and ‘Aproderm’ is very similar to ‘Aveeno’.

Bath and shower emollients are no longer recommended on the NHS because a large UK study on children with eczema found that using these products made no difference to the improvement of eczema compared to just using leave on emollients. Instead, we recommend using your normal emollient as a soap or dissolved in bath water.     Jubilee Street Practice has launched a brand new Wellbeing service for our patients.

    We are a team who thrive on a changing society. We know that to bring about change people need to feel empowered. We live in a diverse community where there are significant health and social challenges. Working together with our patients we want to enable people to live well.

    We facilitate bespoke and resilience projects in partnerships with other voluntary and community sector organisations ranging from therapeutic groups to physical and social interaction activities that support patients with social, emotional and practical needs.

    Some of the activities we run are group therapy for patients suffering with anxiety and depression, Pilates and Yoga classes, a social connection hub and more.

  • COVID-19 Vaccine

    8th December 2020

    Please DO NOT call the practice - we will keep you updated when we have more information.

    As reported in the national media, the first doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine have now arrived in the UK.  50 hospitals across the UK will be the first sites to receive deliveries this week.  Patients over 80 being treated at these hospitals and healthcare workers at higher risk are likely to be the first to be offered protection in the coming weeks.

    There are numerous logistical barriers to overcome before the vaccine can be offered more widely in the community. What we do know is that there is a dedicated Tower Hamlets team working hard on the organisation. To keep our services running smoothly, please DO NOT contact the practice with questions about the vaccine. We will update you as we hear more!

    Living with diabetes is difficult right now, faced with uncertainty that comes with the coronavirus and the recent news reports linking diabetes with an increased risk of dying from COVID-19 it is more important than ever to take control of your condition and access appropriate support when you need it. We have adapted our services to be able to continue to provide the care you need.

    All of our diabetes services continue to provide care and support through telephone, virtual and online clinics, with face-to-face care available where appropriate, such as foot care clinics. Together with local health and care partners we have developed some information online

  • Harm reduction strategies for alcohol dependence - Coronavirus (COVID-19)

    Advice on cutting back or stopping drinking alcohol

    If you are dependent on alcohol stopping drinking suddenly could kill you

    Is this advice for me?
    This advice is for you if you plan to cut down or stop drinking and are at risk of withdrawal symptoms.

    Am I at risk of alcohol withdrawal symptoms?

    • Do you drink over 15 units of alcohol every day?
      15 units is about a ½ bottle of spirits, 1½ bottles of wine, 6 pints of regular strength beer, 3 cans super lager or 2 litres of strong cider.
    • Have you had withdrawal symptoms in the past when cutting back or stopping alcohol? (these can sometimes take up to a few days to start)
    • Do you regularly drink alcohol soon after you get up to relieve shakes, or sweats?

    If you have answered yes to any of the above, you will need to do some planning to cut down or stop your drinking.
